Dr. Saswata GhoshDr. Saswata Ghosh is associated with the Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) as Assistant Professor since 2007. He has completed his PhD and MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Population Studies in 2006. Prior to that, he completed the Master of Population Studies (MPS) from International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai and Master in Mathematics (M.Sc.) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. While pursuing Ph.D., he started his professional research carrier as Associate Fellow in Council of Social Development (CSD), New Delhi. He has also worked with the Population Council, New Delhi as Assistant Programme Officer. His areas of interest include maternal and child health, mortality, morbidity, nutrition, women’s reproductive health, family planning, field survey methods, demographic estimations and econometric methods. He teaches demographic estimation, survey methods, and advanced econometric tools at the M.Phil. level. Three students have already obtained M.Phil. degree under his supervision. He has worked as the Principal Investigator in the project titled “Improving women’s health and institutional delivery of public reproductive health services (Phase-1 & 2)” funded by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS), Germany. Prior to that he had contributed to other national level projects such as “Towards message that matter: Understanding and addressing HIV and SRH risks among married young people in India” and “Empowering Young Mothers in India: First Time Parent Project” funded by DFID, and also to prepare “Birbhum District Human Development Report” funded by UNDP and Planning Commission. He has published a number of research articles in various journals of international repute, which include Journal of Biosocial Science, Asian Population Studies, Asia-Pacific Population Journal, Genus and Economic and Political Weekly.

Professor Yasuyuki SawadaProfessor Yasuyuki Sawada is visiting BIDS from September 10, 2012 to March 31, 2013. He is a Professor in Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo. He is also a Visiting Researcher of the JICA Research Institute of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Faculty of Fellow of Research Institute of Economy, Trade, and Industry (RIETI), and member of inter-governmental Joint Research Project on a New Era of Japan-Korea Relations. He held visiting professorships of Stanford University and Korea University. His research interests include econometric investigations of individual, household and firm behaviors under risks using micro-data from developing and developed countries such as China, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Japan.

Dr. M.G. Quibria Dr. M.G. Quibria will be visiting BIDS from mid-December 2011 to mid-January 2012. Dr. Quibria, who previously worked at the Asian Development Bank, is currently a professor of economics at Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD, USA. His areas of research interest include economic development and international economics. His recent research includes international migration and labor market, microcredit, governance and foreign aid. During this visit, he will work on leadership and economic development.

Dr. Naoko ShinkaiDr. Naoko Shinkai is in BIDS from 24 April, 2011 to 30th June, 2011 as a Visiting Research Scholar.She is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, Japan. Her areas of interest include trade, labour and productivity, growth and income distribution, poverty issues, evaluaion of development projects and assistance, ICT sector etc.

Prof. Fahad KhalilProf. Fahad Khalil is in BIDS from 2nd Aug, 2010 to 18th Sept, 2010 as a Visiting Research Scholar.He is a Professor of Economics at University of Washington, Seattle. His areas of interest are in the theory of incentives, industrial organization, and the economics of information. His recent work includes analyses on corruption, bureaucracies, microfinance and rural household behavior, and tea auctions in Bangladesh.
